Will man face charges for accidentally shooting his neighbor?

| Apr 23, 2021 | Weapons Offenses

Police in Florida are currently investigating an incident involving a firearm that resulted in the death of a woman. The victims neighbor was reportedly cleaning his gun when he fired a shot that killed her. At this point, it is unclear if he will face charges for the shooting.

What allegedly happened?

According to reports, on Sunday, April 11, a Jacksonville man was in his home cleaning his weapon when he pulled the trigger. The bullet went through the wall of his home, traveled roughly 50 yards, and through the wall of his neighbors house. The victim was in her front room when she was hit. First responders were called to the scene, but sadly, she died before being transported to a medical facility.

What police are saying

The man responsible for the shooting is reportedly working with the police. The state attorneys office, as well as the homicide unit, are currently investigating the matter. They have not decided whether to pursue charges. They need to look at the bullet trajectory, the man’s story and determine if the action was intentional — among other things — before deciding if criminal charges are appropriate.

What could happen if charges are filed?

If charges are filed against this gentleman, he could be looking at serious penalties, including incarceration and fines — among others — if convicted. An honest mistake, an accidental shooting, could end up destroying his life in more ways than one. Thankfully, hell have the right to fight to protect himself and his freedom, as would any other Florida resident in such a position. An experienced criminal defense attorney will be able to help him defend himself and fight for the best outcome possible.
